World Beekeeping Reports: Thailand

Participation in the 7th IBRA Conference on Tropical Bees
*IBRA = International Bee Research Association

Thailand is known for its tropical climate, rich natural environment, and unique culture. It also has extensive apiculture that does not rely on technique alone, but works hand in hand with nature. Beekeeping is closely related to the deep respect for and gratitude to nature held by the Thai people.

Deepening Ties with Researchers from Around the World

The Tropical Apiculture Congress was held this year from March 19-25 in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The conference brought together people from a wide range of fields that support apiculture including beekeepers, researchers, and corporate representatives. This year's theme was "Honeybee Management and Diversity." Over 2,000 people from around the world gathered to discuss these topics and to deepen friendships. I was particularly happy to see Professor Dr.G.Vorwohl from Germany again. When I visited Germany two years ago, I asked him about Germany's purity standards for honey, which deepened my confidence in and sureness regarding Yamada Bee Farm's quality standards, which have been developed over many years. At this conference I was able to thank the professor again and find out how he had been recently.
At the Bee World Expo 2000 trade exhibition adjacent to the conference site there were 38 booths squeezed into a small area exhibiting many products, particularly from Thailand and other Asian countries. I enjoyed seeing the many specialties of Thailand. In addition to products such as royal jelly and propolis, there was "longan" honey made from the flower of this fruit that resembles a small litchi. At the booth of my long-time friend and beekeeper Mr. Sangwan Ruengsiri, I had the chance to enjoy a brief chat while drinking a honey drink from a bamboo container. I also learned many things from the casual conversations that I had with other Thai people.

Chiang Mai is located 700 kilometers north of Bangkok, with a climate and landscape ideal for beekeeping. Many varieties of honeybees are reared here, including the Himalayan giant honeybee (Apis laboriosa), the stingless honeybee that burrows into the ground Stingless bee(Trigonasp), and the Oriental honeybee (Apis cerena indica). Much honey and many processed goods are also produced here.
A local market that I visited was filled with colorful flowers and foods, and I even found the nest of a little honeybee . I tasted 100% pure honey made in Thailand until I was satisfied.
I also found a beehive under the eaves of building at a local university that I visited, and the Thai people were very proud of it, explaining to me that a beehive under the eaves is a sign of good fortune. Honeybees are a part of the lives of the Thai people, who seemed very much in touch with nature.
