An Introduction to Beekeeping

2. Essential Beekeeping Tools

Smoker
The smoker blows smoke into the hive to calm the bees when opening the lid of the hive. It consists of a metal fire-pot with a funnel-shaped cover and leather bellows. A smoke-releasing natural fuel such as rice hulls or straw is burned inside the fire-pot and air is injected into the pot by pumping the bellows. The smoke is then directed toward the bees through the funnel.

Hive Tool
A flat, crowbar-like metal tool about 20 centimeters in length. The end is bent to form a hook, and it is used to scrape off excess propolis or to remove the frames.

Protective Clothing
White overalls made from smooth material are often worn. Light colors create less chance of antagonizing the bees, so avoid wearing dark colors. Rough materials, such as those used in jerseys, polo shirts, and work gloves can easily catch the bees' legs, causing them to sting.
Hat: A wide-brimmed hat is necessary.
Bee veil: To protect the face from bees, one wears this fine-mesh veil.
Boots: Long, white boots with tongues are preferred.
Gloves: Thick gloves for cooking are used.
