An Introduction to Beekeeping

3. Extracting Equipment

Honey Extractor
Frames full of honey are placed into the metal tubular casing like spokes of a wheel and the honey is extracted through centrifugal force by spinning. The extracted honey is then removed through the valve at the bottom.

Bee Brush
This brush is used to sweep bees off the frames that have been removed from the hive for honey extraction. It is wet with water before use. Rinse well to prevent honey from sticking.

Uncapping Knife (35-cm blade)
A long-bladed kitchen knife is also good. This knife is used to remove the thin layer of wax known as a "capping" that the worker bees form over the mature honey. These cappings are collected, drained of honey, then heated, pressed, filtered and allowed to harden into blocks of beeswax.
